Walters Skates to D.C.

What do you do once you have biked from New Orleans to Brainerd, spent nine days on a water tower and gone shore to shore on Mille Lacs Lake? Why you roller blade to Washington D.C. Kinship Partner's Gary Walters and his son Jackson will strap on the in-line skates for the 1400 miles to the nation's capitol. He figures it will take 21 days.

Walters will leave August 12th and, if everything goes according to plan, arrive in on the Capitol steps September 9th. The journey is intended to raise money and awareness for Kinship Partners and other youth mentoring programs.

The former Crow Wing County Commissioner said he got the idea for this year's stunt during a deep thought moment in church, "If a short, fat guy like me can do this, anybody can be a mentor."

Kinship Partners Executive Director David Downing said "Our mission is not in a recession." He says there is a backlog of at least 90 kids who have signed up for adult mentors.
