State Representative Al Doty of Royalton doesn't think he heard any final solutions to the state's budget crisis from Governor Pawlenty's State of the State Address Thursday. Lawmakers are facing a nearly $5-billion revenue shortfall for the coming biennium. Doty says it is too early to make plans until the February forecast is released, which is anticipated to carry even worse numbers

It appears two Brainerd nursing home residents were victims of the recent salmonella outbreak. A Twin Cities attorney says 72-year-old Shirley Mae Almer died December 21st at Bethany Good Samaritan after eating contaminated peanut butter. 78-year-old Clifford Tousignant died at Woodland Good Samaritan, also the result of contaminated peanut butter, according to his son.
The Director of both facilities says he is still awaiting the results from the State Health Department.

The bitter weather has affected area schools again. Most classes began two hours late Friday morning. However, there were two closings. Pequot Lakes schools closed for the day due to the cold and electrical problems which resulted in the inability to produce heat. The cold and schedule combined close the Pine River Backus schools. Schools running two hours late were: Brainerd, Crosslake Community, LaPorte, Little Falls, Nevis, Northland-Remer, Park Rapids, Pequot Lakes, Pillager, Staples and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley.
K-Lakes Meteorologist Tony Schumacher says the the bitter weather will moderate through early next week. Another cold snap is expected by next Thursday, but should not last long.

Mike Kurre of the Minnesota DNR tells K-Lakes' News that there's the 4th Annual Youth Mentored Turkey Hunt coming up in mid-April for kids ages 12-17 years. The idea is to get youth and their parents paired up with a mentor-hunter from the Wild Turkey Federation to help familiarize them with turkey hunting, and have a great time outdoors. Happy Dancing Turtle is hosting a sustainable living event coming up at the Pine River-Backus School on Saturday, January 31st. Organizer, Barb Hines, tells K-Lakes that this is the 3rd Annual Event, and will be a day packed with informational workshops, discussion groups, and vendors. Kids' activites are slated all day, as well. The cost to attend for the day is $25.--kids $15., and includes lunch. A new option is year is a program du jour, where you can choose to attend just one workshop for $5.--two for $10., or just have lunch for $7. Vendors accepted until the event date. The Governor's "State of the State" address is coming up this Thursday, and one of the items Governor Pawlenty is sure to mention is the budget deficit. 4B State Representative, Larry Howes, tells K-Lakes that the State has seen tough times before, and has seen its way through. He's sure that the State can do it again, although it won't be easy, and it won't be pretty. Howes said, "2-3 years from now we'll look back and say, 'We did solve it. That wasn't quite that bad.'"

A federal panel has scheduled oral arguments in the appeal of a man sentenced to death for kidnapping and killing University Of North Dakota student Dru Sjodin of Pequot Lakes. Alphonso Rodriguez Jr. of Crookston, Minnesota, is awaiting execution in a federal prison for the 2003 killing of the 22-year old Sjodin. His lawyers have appealed the verdict. The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has set arguments for February 12 in St. Paul. Each side will have 30 minutes in front of a three judge panel.

"Freezin' for a Reason" will be happening at Breezy Point Resort on Saturday, March 7th with registration from 11am-1pm, and the actual Polar Plunge taking place at 1pm. Crow Wing County Sheriff, Todd Dahl, tells K-Lakes that folks take the dive because it's fun and invigorating. . .but mainly its to help a great cause--the special olympians.
