Crow Wing County Sheriff Todd Dahl has issued a warning to ice-fishermen and women after a string of fish house break-ins on North Long Lake. 8 break-ins were reported to the Sheriff's Office since January 18. Thieves caused damage to windows and doors to gain entry. Thousands of dollars worth of fishing equipment, fishing electronics and televisions were stolen. Dahl advises fish house owners to take valuable equipment and supplies with them when they leave. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office at 218-829-4749.

Hackensack becomes a city of colors tonight. At 6 p.m, there will be a lighted snowmobile parade, followed by fireworks over Birch Lake, all part of Back to Hack Days this weekend. Chamber Spokesman Jay Kline tells KLKS News, a good sense of humor will be required for the Snowflake Pageant Saturday night. He says it is a "Cross dressing thing," in which the men dress as women, the women as men in a '60's hippy theme. There will also be radar runs, ice games and a chili feed as part of Back to Hack Days.

The Trailside Park in Pequot Lakes will be the site of the 15Th annual Antique Snowmobile Rendezvous this weekend. Organizer Dave Guenther says enthusiasts will be in town from all over the Midwest for the event that begins with a trail ride at 1 p.m. Friday. The Spectator event will be drags and oval races outside the chamber building in Pequot beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday. There will also be an antique and vintage show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Congress is considering an economic recovery plan that would create more than 10,000new road and bridge jobs in Minnesota and channel more than over $400 million in assistance to local school districts. Congressman Jim Oberstar says their goal is to have it ready for President Obama to sign into law by the middle of February.
Oberstar, Chairman of the House Transportation Committee, says they are on track to create and save 3 to 4 million jobs.
Oberstar says the legislation could create jobs 90 days after it is passed.

State Senator Paul Koering, Fort Ripley and State Representative John Ward, Brainerd, will be holding a town hall meetings in Nisswa, Baxter, Brainerd, and Crosby, Saturday, January 31. The meetings will be an opportunity to speak personally with Senator Koering, and Representative Ward and for them to provide the public with a preview of this year's session.
Both men indicate the issues will be complex, and difficult to solve.

Cold weather greets a number of outdoor activities around the Brainerd lakes this weekend. There is Back to Hack Days in Hackensack, The Antique Snowmobile Rendezvous in Pequot Lakes and the Ice Fishing Extravaganza on Gull Lake. Meteorologist Tony Schumacher says it's important for people to dress wisely for outdoor activities with lots of layers of clothing.
Wind chill advisories are in effect from 9 p.m. Friday to Noon Saturday. Wind chill values are expected to be in the 25 to 35 below range.

Bitter cold weather faces the expected 10-thousand anglers for the $150-thousand Ice Fishing Extravaganza on Gull Lake Saturday. The high is expected to reach just above zero, with wind chills well below zero.
Crow Wing County Sheriff Todd Dahl has measured 14 to 16 inches of ice on Hole in the Day Bay, where the contest will be held. He tells KLKS News, extra deputies will be on duty to help with crowd control. Sheriff Dahl says there will be congestion on Highway 371, and is encouraging motorists to slow-down.

According to the Crow Wing Sheriff's Office, on Monday, the 19th of January, the Lakes Area Drug Investigative Division conducted a search warrant on Clearwater Road in Baxter. The warrant was the result of an on-going investigation into the distribution of methamphetamine in the Crow Wing County area. The estimated street value of the meth seized is $17,000. 22-year-old Elizabeth Anne Tadych of Baxter was arrested at the scene. She is being held in the Crow Wing County Jail pending formal charges.

A pro-life demonstration is planned for noon today on the steps of the State Capitol on the anniversary of the Roe v Wade decision. However, State Senator Mary Olson of Bemidji tells KLKS News, she does not sense a big appetite for dealing with divisive social issues. She says the budget problems facing the state are so huge, they need everyone focusing on the problem. Senator Olson says one upside to a down economy is the opportunity to look seriously at streamlining government. She thinks there could be some consolidation of natural resources management.

State Senator Paul Koering, Fort Ripley is looking for $300,000 dollars to reconstruct the portion of Highway 25, which runs through the city of Pierz.
Highway 25 is Main Street that runs right through town. It's also a state Truck Highway and a major north-south route between Brainerd and St. Cloud. Koering says the money was in a bill last year, but the bill never made it out of Committee. He says since Highway 25 is part of the state highway system we should be able to count on the state to help with the reconstruction costs when the highway runs through the center of a town like in Pierz.

State Representative John Ward of Brainerd is disappointed he can't attend the inauguration of Barack Obama. Ward was a delegate to the Democratic Convention in Denver, where Obama won his party's nomination. Because he was a delegate, Ward could have had a ticket to the event. However, because of pressing concerns here, he decided to stay in St. Paul.
Ward says the greatest asset Obama brings to the job is the sense of hope.

Former State Senator Don Samuelson of Brainerd viewed the inauguration of President-Elect Obama from a 200 yards. He says hre was on his feet all day, beginning at 5 a.m.. Samuelson says this is the largest event ever in Washington, with over 20 thousand police and guardsmen in control. He says despite the huge number of people, everyone was happy. Samuelson is optimistic Obama will be able to deal with the sour economy in short order and improve relations with Europe.

The USDA's Farm Service Agency says the sign up period for the 2005-2007 Crop Disaster Program will end February 27, 2009.
No late filed applications will be approved after February 27th.

According to the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office two persons were injured in a two car collision at about 8:15 Monday morning on County Road 11, near its intersection with County Road 109 North of Merrifield. Cars were driven by Joshua David Corbett, age 28 of New Hampshire and 17-year old Brooklyn Kaye Fisher of Merrifield. Both drivers were transported to Cuyuna Range Medical Center by ambulance. It appears that icy roads contributed to the crash. The crash is still under investigation and the condition of the drivers is unknown.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation announces that the Minnesota Statewide Transportation Plan for 2009-2028 is now available for public review and comment. The report, titled "Transforming Minnesota's Transportation System," sets a long-range vision for transportation in Minnesota and identifies transportation system needs, goals and priorities for the next 20 years. There are several opportunities to review and comment on the plan. On Thursday, March 26, the public is invited to attend a video conferencing session at 9:00am at the District Headquarters at 7694 Industrial Park Road in Baxter and the District Office in St. Cloud. Comments should be submitted by 4:40pm on Tuesday, March 31.

Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar says President-Elect Barack Obama faces many challenges as he prepares to assume control of the White House. She tells KLKS News, she receives too many letters from young families who have lost their jobs, or had their hours cut back, and wonder how they are going to make it.
