Brainerd Families Take Solace in Presidential Signing

President Barack Obama Tuesday signed legislation that will help avoid the kind of salmonella outbreak that killed two Brainerd nursing home residents in December of 2008.

72-year-old Shirley Mae Almer died at Bethany Good Samaritan and 78-year-old Clifford Tousignant died at Woodland Good Samaritan as the result of contaminated peanut butter.   The peanuts came from a Georgia plant, which has since shut down.

Obama joined millions of parents who wanted the government to do a better job of keeping peanut butter and other foods safe for kids and adults. 

Congress passed the bill  to respond to several outbreaks of E. coli and salmonella poisonings.
