DNR Warns Of Minnesota Ice Conditions

The DNR is urging anglers and others to check ice conditions before heading out on the lake this weekend.

Unseasonably mild weather is making for unsafe ice conditions across the state.

DNR water safety specialist Tim Smalley says a 71-year old man fell not once but twice through the ice Friday on Mille Lacs Lake.

Smalley says the man drove his all-terrain vehicle through the ice about a half-mile from shore.  The man climbed out of the water and began walking to shore when he fell through again.  The man got out again and made it to shore, where he was treated by paramedics for mild hypothermia.

Smalley says people should check ice conditions with a local bait shop or resort before heading out.

Airport Screening of Soldiers Eases

The U.S. Senate unanimously passed a bill authorizing expedited airport screening for U.S. soldiers traveling on orders.  The legislation was authored by Rep. Chip Cravaack of the 8th District.

The bill orders the Transportation Security Administration to come up with a plan within 180 days to devise a separate screening procedure for uniformed members of the armed services. As a result of the bill, they should be able to pass through security checkpoints with less intrusive screening. Under the current law, soldiers receive the same level of screening as regular travelers.
The freshman Republican, was inspired to introduce the bill after seeing a service member have to remove his combat boots at an airport checkpoint.

On Monday evening, the House also passed another measure proposed by Cravaack that designates the post office in Pine City, MN as the "Master Sergeant Daniel L. Fedder Post Office. The 34 year-old Marine was killed in Afghanistan in August 2010 by an improvised bomb.

Copper Thefts Rising

You may see fewer "For Sale" signs in front of homes in Crow Wing County.  It's not that the real estate market has heated up, but rather an attempt to deter vandalism.

Sheriff Todd Dahl tells KLKS News, vacant homes can be an easy target for those wishing to steal copper and another materials.  He says they don't care if they flood the house during the theft.

Sheriff Dahl says it's important to maintain good communication through neighborhood watch programs.

Area Road Work

Crews continue with the overhead sign panel overlays on Interstate 94 with intermittent lane closures in both the eastbound and westbound this week between the St. John's College exit to the Highway 241/St. Michael ex.it

Beginning today, motorists can also expect intermittent lane closures on both northbound and southbound lanes on Highway 15 at the junction Highway 10 and on the eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway near Sauk and the eastbound lanes of Highway 10 near Little Falls.

This project will require single lane restrictions in the areas were crews are working. Work is expected to be completed by the end of December, weather permitting.
